Four ways the scope can take shape
These examples show the relationship between reach, depth, and investment. They are useful planning views rather than predetermined packages.
A focused assessment
$2,500 to $25,000+
One leader, one team, or an organization-level diagnostic. The fee reflects the number of participants, assessment depth, interviews, analysis, and debrief work.
Sustained work with one leader
$25,000 to $40,000
A six-month executive coaching engagement. Most are approximately $30,000, with the final scope shaped by assessment, stakeholder work, access, and context.
Sustained work with a senior team
$50,000 to $150,000+
A six-month leadership team coaching engagement. Most are approximately $90,000, with the range driven by team size, individual depth, customization, and reinforcement.
Organization-wide implementation
$150,000 to $500,000+
Multi-phase work across leaders, teams, functions, and operating routines. Organizational reach, locations, cohorts, practitioner team, measurement, and reinforcement shape the scope.
What makes the investment go up or down?
Price follows the work required to understand the situation, involve the right people, create useful practice, and help the change hold.
The investment usually rises when
- More leaders, teams, cohorts, or locations are involved
- Assessment, interviews, or analysis become deeper
- The work requires more customization or onsite delivery
- Several senior practitioners or individual coaches are involved
- Measurement and reinforcement continue over a longer period
The investment can be lower when
- The objective and participant group are tightly bounded
- Useful diagnostic information already exists
- Virtual delivery fits the work
- Fewer interviews or custom materials are needed
- The engagement has a shorter reinforcement period
CGP will not remove work that is necessary for the engagement to be useful.
Comparing providers
The service label does not tell you what is inside the work.
Two providers may both use labels such as executive coaching, team development, or leadership workshop while proposing very different scopes. A lower-cost option may be standardized, lightly prepared, led by a less experienced practitioner, or delivered once with little follow-through. That can be appropriate when the need is narrow.
A higher-cost engagement may include deeper discovery, stakeholder interviews, assessment, senior-practitioner access, customization, work across several levels, onsite delivery, measurement, and sustained reinforcement. A higher fee does not automatically mean better work. Compare who will do the work, what is included, what happens between sessions, and how the work connects to the business issue.
The pricing model should match the decision.
A focused diagnostic may be priced per leader, team, or engagement. Coaching and team development use a total engagement range because duration and access matter. Organization-wide work uses a broad planning range because the number of phases, cohorts, and operating layers can vary significantly.
| Type of work | Common pricing basis | What the proposal should clarify |
|---|---|---|
| Assessment and debrief | Per leader, team, or defined diagnostic | Participants, instruments, interviews, analysis, report, and debrief |
| Executive coaching | Total six-month investment, sometimes paid monthly | Assessment, cadence, access, stakeholder work, onsite work, and continuation |
| Leadership team coaching | Total engagement investment | Team scope, individual depth, facilitators, sessions, practice, and reinforcement |
| Organization-wide implementation | Phase-based project fee or, in some cases, monthly retainer | Reach, phases, cohorts, locations, internal capability, measurement, and expenses |
| Keynote or workshop | Defined event or sequence fee | Format, audience, customization, materials, facilitators, travel, and follow-up |
Ask about the complete cost, not only the headline fee.
Every proposal should state the work included, delivery period, payment timing, and point when continuation or expansion becomes a new decision. Assessments may be purchased separately or included in broader work, and the proposal will say which.
Unless a proposal says otherwise, reasonable travel and related expenses for in-person work are billed separately. When assessment licenses, venue costs, books or materials, taxes, or optional follow-up apply, CGP addresses them during scoping. There should be no surprise expansion after work begins.
How does payment and continuation work?
Many multi-month engagements may be structured as one total program investment or as monthly payments. Some organizational-development and family-enterprise advisory relationships may use a monthly retainer. Monthly payments describe timing; CGP does not present them as financing.
The proposal confirms the payment schedule before work begins. If the client later wants to add participants, locations, assessments, sessions, or another phase, CGP discusses and prices that change before expanding the work. Every continuation is a separate decision.
An honest answer
When is leadership development worth the investment?
The investment can make sense when the issue is consequential, leaders are willing to examine their own contribution, and the work is tied to specific changes in decisions, relationships, accountability, or execution. The client and CGP should agree on what needs to change and how progress will be reviewed.
It is usually a poor investment when the organization wants a motivational event, expects CGP to fix other people, will not make time to practice, or needs legal, clinical, crisis, or employee-relations support instead. CGP will say so when a smaller step or another kind of help is more appropriate.
Can an online calculator give you a reliable estimate?
The ranges on this page provide the useful planning answer. CGP does not use an automated estimator because the same service label can describe very different work, and a false sense of precision would be less helpful than an honest range.
The free Download Session is the practical estimator. In 90 minutes, a CGP coach helps clarify what is happening, who is involved, what a sensible first scope might be, and whether a paid engagement should be proposed. Preparation and a written decision summary are included. There is no obligation to continue.
